Singing In Worship
Singing to the Lord God in worship is a sound of oneness; which pleases Him because He commands us to do so from the following scriptures:
“Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;” – Ephesians 5:19
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” – Colossians 3:16
“Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee.” – Hebrews 2:12
“By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.” – Hebrews 13:15
“Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.” – James 5:13
In the future we read the following actions of the saints, as they sing praises to the Lord:
“And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;” – Revelation 5:9
“And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth.” – Revelation 14:3
“And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints.” – Revelation 15:3
As you can see, these scriptures show the importance of singing to the Lord. It is definitely an acceptable action in worship towards the Lord in spirit and truth.
Every New Testament Believer should have a new song in their heart.
Praise and worship are right according to Psalm 33:1, “Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous: for praise is comely for the upright.” Singing expresses your feeling, but it must be in God’s obedience and truth. God must be respected at all times through every song sung. You do not need any instrumental music to express your feelings towards God in your singing? For most of the service, it is never necessary for any church member to play instruments to sing songs in worship. Every time you sing (even if you can sing or not), you are obeying God’s command by “offering up a sacrifice of praise (see Hebrews 13:15 above).”
Just sitting in worship service and not expressing anything verbally to the Lord is unacceptable worship! The worship leader and the background singing are not worshipping God for you. You must do it for yourself. That’s the whole purpose of going to church – to sing, pray, etc. Now, This is an act of worship!!
Music is only a stimulus to the mind and body. Only a means to express worship, but it is not worship! Praise and Worship are not mood experiences. There are instruments found in the scriptures. However, there is never instrumental music playing in worship service, as everyone sings. Also, there’s never a soloist either, just only singing. We never have entertainment in worship with fog lights, sounds, and soloists. There is acapella congregational singing of psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. There’s no debate here.
If we follow the above scriptures reading, we will have God’s divine inspiration for new songs from our hearts. If we follow only what God has authorized in our singing for worship service, then the whole congregation will sing without instruments of music.
