Why Do You Go To Church?
Hopefully, you are going to church to give to the Father God. Worship is a response to honor and respect. This is what going to church is all about! We go to church to worship God, His Son, and the Present of the Holy One. Not to get, but to give. Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness (Psalm 29:2). We offer something to Him, not to receive from Him. And I know if we praise Him, we will receive a blessing from God. Even God gives! Why? “It is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35b).”
Do you have this in mind when you get ready to go to church? Will you be preparing your heart to give? Are your heart and mind eager to worship God? Have you thought about these questions before today? If you haven’t, well today is the day for a change! Change your attitude towards worshipping God, and learn to worship acceptably in God’s sight. My purpose is for you to decide on whether you’re going to worship God or not, seeing you learned the purpose, differences between acceptable and unacceptable worship, and its meaning.
John 4:20-24 gives us instructions and essential needs for going to “church” in order to worship. Let’s read it:
“Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”
The conversation between Jesus and the Samaritan Woman above gives us the important reason why we go to “church” in the first place? (V. 20) She says, Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. She didn’t know that God is a Spirit and you must worship in spirit and in truth as Jesus expressed in the following verses: 22, 23, and 24. (V. 21) Jesus says to the Woman, believe me, the hour cometh when ye shall neither in this mountain nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. What is Jesus saying here? Things are about to change in the way worship is to take place here on earth. (V.22) Jesus also said, Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. The Jewish people were introduced to God’s perfect redemption plan through worshipping YHWH, G-d, Elohim, and the Samaritans were gentiles and did not know how to worship God acceptably. (V.23) Jesus expressed, but the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. Now prophecy being fulfilled to every true believer in Jesus, true worshipper of God, that know who and what they worship with the understanding also, as the Father gives blessings to genuine hearts of worship.
How is this worship thing done? (V.24) God is a spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. God is a spirit and you are a spirit. All spirit beings must worship God as he is; in spirit also in truth. This is a clear message to all worshippers who have a desire to worship God when they get ready to go to any local assembly. If you go to get something out of the music or sermons, you have missed the point. These things are only stimuli to cause you to worship in truth.
Psalm 99:5 Exalt ye the Lord our God, and worship at his footstool; for he is holy.
John 9:31 Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man is a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.
As you can see from the Old and New Testaments, God is exalted by His worshippers. True worshippers who will worship Him “in spirit and in truth:” for the Heavenly Father daily looks for His children of obedience. This act is intentional on His part, to give us correction, help, and instruction. All to bless us! Glory to His Name.
